Frequently Asked Questions
Is this really women-only?
Yes, it is! Nocturna was created as a women-only space to encourage comfort, confidence, connection, and collaboration. Especially when shooting at night in remote locations. We will be offering co-ed workshops as well.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
We will accommodate dietary needs where possible. If you have extreme limitations, please contact us before the trip to discuss options.
Can Tim actually cook?
Yes! Tim comes from a long line of amazing cooks. His mom taught the cooking classes at BYU and ran a business selling cooking products. He has been teaching cooking classes since he was tall enough to reach the stove. His Dad had a catering business growing up that specialized in old-fashioned, Dutch oven cooking.
You can expect fresh, wholesome meals featuring the best flavors of Utah and the southwest.
Where will we be meeting during the day?
We have reserved the public firehouse during the days to serve as our central meeting space and dining hall.
Do I get a discount if I’m already subscribed to Milky Way in Motion?
Absolutely! We love our students and will discount the amount you paid for the course. Just contact us, and we’ll make you a coupon.
Is it required to complete Milky Way in Motion before the retreat?
No, but it is highly recommended. This will give you an amazing starting point to make sure you get the most from the retreat.
Will we be doing anything before the retreat?
Absolutely! We’ll be doing 1-2 prep sessions to make sure everyone is ready and provide an opportunity to ask questions. It’s our top priority that each of you has an amazing experience, so we’ll be asking a lot of questions to understand your expectations and make sure you create memories that will last your lifetime.
What should I bring?
- DSLR or mirrorless camera (Must allow full manual control)
- Star tracker (Optional)
- Wide-angle lens
- Idea: 14-24mm (full-frame equivalent)
- Aperture: f/2.8 or faster recommended
- Sturdy tripod (Ideally with a ball top)
- Extra camera batteries
- Memory cards
- Cleaning kit
- Warm clothes – The desert gets chilly at night!
- Closed-toe shoes
- Laptop, charger & editing software for editing sessions (not required but highly recommended)
- Headlamp
- Personal items (clothes, toiletries, sunscreen etc.)
What is the cancellation policy?
A non-refundable deposit of $650 (room cost) is required to secure your spot. The retreat balance is due 90 days before the event.
• Cancel 120+ days before start: Full refund less deposit
• Cancel 90–119 days before start: 50% refund (less deposit)
• Cancel 60–89 days before start: 25% refund (less deposit)
• Cancel within 60 days: No refund unless your spot is filled at full price, in which case you will receive a refund less a $100 administrative fee.
Spots may be transferred to another person up to the retreat start date with written notice.
If the retreat is canceled by organizers, you may choose a full refund or transfer to a future retreat.
We strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance.
I’m not from Utah. Where should I fly to?
Goblin Valley is off the beaten path, but it’s right in the middle of the most amazing national parks in the United States! There is a small regional airport in Moab, Utah, that’s 1.5 hours away, but flights are not frequent and usually more expensive.
The closest major airport is in Salt Lake City, Utah. We recommend planning on adding a day or two to see Arches and Capitol Reef while you are in the area.
The Las Vegas airport is another option if you would like to see Zion and Bryce Canyon on your way there or on the way back.
Will I have to rent a car?
Our home base will be in Hanksville, Utah. If you fly in, you MUST rent a car. We will be carpooling to Goblin Valley and on our excursions. If you want to visit the Valley of the Gods in Capitol Reef, you will need a vehicle with high clearance, like an SUV or a truck.
